The summer time is meant to be a time of relief, a hiatus of schedule, and a time of relaxation. However, losing repetition can be harmful for children who need to have predictable timelines. Special needs children rely on routines and strict schedules in order to function properly. The challenge of Seeach Sods summer programming was to instill fun, excitement and the enjoyment of summer elegantly balanced with daily schedules, behavioral plans, and routines.
Our staff displayed tremendous commitment towards out students and residents and have proven, once again, their above and beyond devotion to their work. They showed tremendous dedication by extending the schools days until the 9th of Av, which shortened their summer vacation by 3 weeks. This was in order to ensure that the students would not lose their progress they had gained through the entire school year. Right after the 9th of Av, camps and fun activities began until the reopening of school programming. Their vacation time paralleled the exact summer schedule of all general- ed schools in Jerusalem.
Seeach Sod's respite programs were filled to its brim with children whose families needed a much deserved break. The parents were able to refuel their energies, while knowing their precious children were in safe and loving hands. As a result of the summer respite program being so successful, Seech Sod's Chagim (Holiday) Respite program is already filled leaving (at this time) no available place.
In August, our residents and vocational workers went up north to Mount Meiron for 10 packed fun-filled days. Leading up to this vacation period, our staff worked around the clock in order to ensure the success of this unique summer program. Every visitor that joined this summer get-away, was fulfilled above and beyond their expectations with the incredible atmosphere and individual attention.
The trips taken in this vacation period included, but was not limited to, a trip taken to the air force campus in Haifa, jeeping, boating, visiting special parks, in addition to magic shows and musical entertainment.
The camp was divided into three divisions, two of boys and 1 of girls, all on different spectrum of functioning. This was done to ensure that each camper was catered their specific and individual needs. The last group had a special last Shabbat with the Head Administrator of Seeach Sod, Rabbi Shimon Levy, which brought the summer to a meaningful closure. The feeling of satisfaction was tangible and it helped give motivation to our staff to continue their very important work.
